Road to Necropolis

The series Road To Necropolis was inspired by the film Shoah and the photographs of Roman Vishniac. In the film Shoah, two scenes come to mind. In the first some old Polish men explain how as boys they had watched the cattle cars with Jews go by. They would run a finger across their throats to “warn” the people of their upcoming fate. In another scene a train engineer is interviewed at the former entrance to Auschwitz. There he is asked, “Were there sunny days like this?” He replies, “Oh yes, much nicer ones.” I was intrigued by the concept of terrible things happening on bright sunny days. Our mind’s eye usually provides a much bleaker atmosphere when thinking of such matters. Throughout this series there are the visual clues of a sunny day, such as harsh shadows, but the lighting is wrong. In one of Vishniac's photographs his daughter is standing in front of a store. Once owned by a Jew, it now sold devices for measuring Aryan craniums. I found this photograph bizarre because it's both surreal and documentary at the same time. With this work I have endeavored to explore the conflict in that juxtaposition. I wanted to depict being transported to, and living in, a place where people exist obliviously to the evil machinations all around them.
